KDU College in Industry-based Learning Opens Two New Kitchens

The official opening of KDU College's two new kitchens, Escoffier and Carême saw an exciting atmosphere as YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, Penang State Councilor of Tourism Development Culture, Arts and Heritage also added glamour to the occasion gracing the launching. Many guests were present for the opening as well as they were dying for a peek on the newly invested RM1.2million kitchens fully equipped with high-tech equipment to facilitate lessons for budding pastry chefs, under the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts.

Since its establishment in 1991 the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is often regarded as the most established hospitality and culinary school licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education to train professional chefs. At present it offers Certificate in Professional Chef Training, Diploma in Professional Chef Training as well as many other hospitality programs up to degree level. In support of this statement, YB Danny Law also stated in his speech that, "It is important that this culinary pride of Penang continues to grow its talents and maintain its standards and undeniable reputation within the state".

According to KDU College Principal, Dr. Chong Beng Keok, "One of our two new kitchens is furnished with appliances for full pastry training. It can also be used for chocolate making and cake decoration sessions. Another new kitchen can cater for full scale butchery training for smoking of meat or seafood, sausage making, pate, meat processing, etc. Both the garde manger (cold kitchen) and butchery kitchens are very synergistic and are highly productive kitchens. The unique design of the kitchens, in particular, enables interactive exchange between students and lecturer. She also gave a preview that two new programs, namely Diploma in Culinary Arts and Certificate in Bakery will be offered sometime in 2011."

Running concurrently on the same day is the KDU Charity Food Fair which aims to raise funds for the needy in conjunction with KDU Penang's 20th Anniversary Celebration. The beneficiary of the charity food fair will be the HOPE Worldwide Penang who is currently raising funds for a Free Mobile Clinic. The mobile clinic will make regular visits in the rural areas of Penang and Kedah such as the Orang Asli settlements, as these communities typically do not have access to most of the basic medical care and facilities. With over 20 food stalls featuring various specialities including Penang Hawker food, this event provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute and achieve the mission of the foundation, to reach out to the needy and less-privileged.
