Jubilant Graduates Tossed their Hats to Celebrate

It was a day of celebration for 384 students of KDU College, Penang on 26th September 2010 as they were conferred a degree, diploma or certificate during the KDU College's 17th Convocation Ceremony held at Equatorial Hotel, Penang. The ceremony was attended by graduates and beaming parents and guardians.

The event was particularly special this year as the event was also graced by the founder of KDU College who is also the ExecutiveDeputy Chairman of Paramount Corporation Sdn. Bhd., Dato' Dr. Teo Chiang Quan.

The event commenced at 2pm with speeches from the Chief Executive Officer of KDU College Sdn Bhd, Dr. Chia Chee Fen, followed by the Principal of KDU College (PG) Sdn Bhd, Dr. Chong Beng Keok. IMI's Representative for the ceremony Professor Michael Hitchcock, Academic Director and dean of Faculty of IMI University Centre Switzerland, when delivering his speech also commented that the KDU-IMI partnership is a very successful collaboration and has produced many highly qualified professionals. The Principal of KDU College Penang, Dr. Chong Beng Keok also congratulated all graduates and urged them to continue seeking education.

Some of the graduates even flew in from overseas to attend the memorable day. Flowers, teddy bears and camera flashes could be seen all over the grand ballroom where the ceremony took place. The look of pride was unmistakable on the faces of proud parents and happy lecturers.

It was also a day of celebration for 2 of our student who obtained achievements against the odds. They are two of our hearing-impaired graduates Wong Wee Ping and Tan Ruey Jiuan. Wong Wee Ping who graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Computing Studies from Northumbria University, United Kingdom credits his supervisor and IT lecturer Mr. Lai Kim Min for being the backbone of his achievements with his endless advice and help. According to Wee Ping, the journey towards success wasn't always smooth as he juggled a balance between studies and final year projects. He is currently a programmer with a prolific creative agency in Penang and hopes to continue with his Masters and work his way to become a software engineer in the near future. Meanwhile, Tan Ruey Jiuan is a graduate with Distinction in Diploma in Digital Art & Design. Ruey Jiuan expressed his gratitude towards his caring lecturers and fellow classmates who made positive differences to his life.

On a cherished day for all, KDU College Penang also proudly celebrated its achievers like Joshua Yam Weng Tai and Jazz Tan Yee Mei who are both the valedictorians for this year's graduation. Joshua Yam Weng Tai, a graduate of Distinction in Diploma in Electronics & Telecomunication Engineering delivered an inspiring message and relates that the qualification that graduates possess will bring us to the doorstep of what we hope to achieve. "It will grant us entrance into that door, but once you enter that door, staying in there will then be totally up to you and not on your qualification you possess." He shared a brief story about Love, Success and Wealth with a moral story and hoped that it will help graduates through their journey through life in the future.

Another recipient, Jazz Tan Yee Mei, graduate of the Diploma in Computer Studies program and a widely active member of student council projects learned that education is not just about flipping books and getting good grades. She learned about life, and to never give up the journey no matter what difficulties faced that might bring us down. Jazz Tan Yee Mei was also the pillar of strength behind the recent successful event - Youth Jam Merdeka Celebration.

The ceremony ended with jubilant faces of each graduates receiving their scrolls as they tossed the hat that marks the transition from students to professionals.
