Industrial Site Visit to Philips Lumileds on 27th April 2012

43 diploma and undergraduate students from the Engineering Department have visited Philips Lumileds on 27th April 2012. The students are accompanied by Dr Yeap Gik Hong, the Programme Leader of the Engineering Department and Miss Anna Lim Siew Fang, the Placement Executive from KICC Department. The visit started at 9 am and finished at 12.30 pm. During the visit, the Philips Lumileds HR Director, Mr Manivannan Tachina-Moorthi shared with all the participants the Philips 120 years of innovation in the areas of indoor & outdoor lighting, medical, automotive, consumer electronics and human lifestyle before concentrating on the LED lighting solution which is the main business of Philips Lumileds.

Students also being briefed about the LED technology by the Senior Manager of the Illumination Segment Product Develop department, Mr Chan Choon Earn. He has talked about the fundamental operating principle of the LED, the fabrication process, the characterization parameters of the LED (Colour Correlation Temperature, Colour Rendering Index, CIE Colour Space Chromaticity Diagram, etc.), factors to consider when choosing LED lighting, LED family produced by Philips Lumileds, advantages and disadvantages of the LED lighting against conventional lighting as well as the applications of LED lighting. As requested by the Philips Lumileds management, a KDU corporate video and overview presentation was given by Dr Yeap.

After a light refreshment, the students are divided into 2 groups for the plant tour. During the plant tour, students have to wear the 'jump suit' which covers from head to toe as well as the glove before they are allowed to enter the production areas. This is the first time experience for majority of the students. Students have the opportunity to see the LED manufacturing process like die attach, over-mould, electrical and optical test as well as the pick and place (binning) process.

After the plant tour, students have had a session with the HR personel, MR CY Lim regarding the job opportunity and internship placement at Philips Lumileds. Philips Lumileds is kind enough to give each of the students a souvenir pack after the group photo taking session. The visit adjourned at around 12.30 pm.
