The Green War: Raging War for the Environment

GEORGE TOWN: Modern development has taken a heavy toll on our ecosystem and environment, triggering major environmental issues such as global warming, destruction of natural habitats and land erosions. Seeing that humanity have robbed so much of nature under this flag, The Green War campaign 2011 aims to be the first wave of many efforts in giving back to nature by way of replanting mangrove trees in Penang.

Organized by students of USM-KDU Bachelor of Communication in Persuasive Communication Program 2011/2012, The Green War campaign's initiative focuses on promoting the importance and advantages of mangroves in our ecosystem as well as to illustrate how mangroves can benefit the environment and the community. By that, the campaign intends to eventually nurture positive attitude amongst the public towards preserving mangroves for the betterment of our ecosystem.

The Green War campaign will also be collaborating with the Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association (PIFWA) as they are experts in preserving and revitalizing mangrove swamps in Malaysia. They are made up of local river-side fishermen who have joined forces to help seek out and solve issues faced by the fishing community along the coasts of Malaysia.

Supported by the Penang state Government, the campaign plots to ignite Penangites to fight for the environment starting from tree replanting efforts – which also supports Penang's Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's target to plant 75,000 trees annually in Penang. It features a list of programmes running from October to December this year; focusing on instilling knowledge on not only tree planting activities but also other eco-friendly acts. The dates for these programmes will take place as follows:
