Excitement and Inventiveness abound at the KDU University College Design and Innovation Expo 2011

KDU is always striving to give our students the edge to succeed and to do this we aim to create opportunities for them to let their talents shine. In this line, the Engineering Department proudly organized the recent KDU University College Design and Innovation Expo 2011 that was held on the 29th of June 2011 at the KDU UC Auditorium in Damansara Jaya. Running from 9am to 3:45pm, the Expo aimed to showcase the final projects of its KDU - Northumbria University's engineering design students to the public as well as industry partners.

The competition was held in high esteem as it was presided over by a diverse panel of judges, headed by Associate Professor Dr. Vigna Kumaran Ramachandramurthy, the Chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Malaysia. Also on the panel were Mr. Ng Kim Beng, the Principal Engineer of Maxis Broadband, Mr. Sebastian Sowirmuthu, the M & E Manager of Indah Water, Professor Fazel Naghdy, the former head of school of the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Wollongong, and Mr. Chan Sai Chok, CEO of the Perunding Eagles Consulting Engineers.

The atmosphere around the Expo was competitively tense as students knew they were also vying for attractive cash prizes that were sponsored by Northumbria University, the University of Wollongong, AVP (SEA) Sdn. Bhd., Multimedia Development Corporation, Queen Mary, University of London, Strachclyde University, Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, ACA Pacific Technology Sd. Bhd and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). Looking at the attractive prizes, the students definitively threw in everything they had in their bid to impress the judges.

In the end, four students from the KDU Penang Campus did KDU Penang proud and won over the panel of judges, making a clean sweep of all the prizes available. The talented winners included Lim Seong Chiun, who took away two prizes including Best Overall and the Multidisciplinary award with his project entitled Bipedal Robot. Winning the pize for most innovative project was Teoh Soon Yong with her project entitled Automated Sprinkler System, and the award for Best Northumbria Year 3 project went to Joasha Yam Weng Thai for his project called SMS-Controlled Multi-Socket. Yeoh Huey Ling and her Harmonic Filter and Antenna Switch Design won the Sevaraja Award for Best Project. Each prize consisted of a whopping RM1,000, provided by our esteemed sponsors. It was definitely a day for everyone to savor.

The KDU engineering department prides itself in producing exceptional industry ready Engineers for the future and Expo's like this creates a platform for aspiring young engineers to showcase their most innovative designs in a supportive yet constructively critical environment. Giving the students the opportunity to feature their work before a panel of highly respected industry professionals, it was an invaluable experience for the students and definitely one that will further push them ahead of the rest in their careers next time.
