Euphoric graduates toss their caps in celebration at KDU Penang’s 18th Academic Convocation

It was a day of celebration for hundreds of KDU College Penang's students at the college's 18th Academic Convocation on the 2nd of October 2011 held at the Equatorial Hotel Penang. The convocation ceremony marks the triumphant end of a student's academic career and represents a hugely important milestone for our students as they stepped onstage to claim their diplomas or degrees.

Students came from near and far, some even flying in from overseas to congregate excitedly amidst a sea of flowers, teddy bears and camera flashes. The look of joy was unmistakable on their faces as well as the look of pride on the parents, guardians and dedicated lecturers who helped them on their journey.

KDU University College's vice chancellor, Professor Teoh Kok Soo who flew in from Kuala Lumpur to grace the event, in his opening speech expressed hope that the education our graduates have received at KDU will have provided them with the road map that will lead to their desired destination as well as the compass that will guide them with principles and values that will bring meaning to their lives.

KDU College Penang's Principal, Dr. Chong Beng Keok also bade our students' good luck on their journey ahead, with a reminder to go forth into the community to share their new competencies and skills. It is through our graduates' demonstrations of their skills that the KDU Education Group's mission can be unfolded to enrich the community of our country.

The convocation ceremony was also graced by Mr. Gavin Caldwell of IMI University Centre in Luzerne, Switzerland. Professor Guy Littlefair of Deakin University, Professor David Bell of Northumbria University and Professor David Shepherd of Keele University. KDU Penang was also similarly pleased to welcome Dr. Lyn Karstadt, the operational dean from the faculty of health and human sciences at the University of Hertfordshire as a guest speaker for the event.

The presentation of academic awards commenced with our black-robed students taking their final march down the aisle as undergraduates. Indeed, we at KDU continually pride ourselves on our student success rate, and are pleased to note that nearly 800 of our students received their diplomas or degrees this year! They join the rest of our alumni as our greatest triumph, and we wish them the best of luck as they spread their wings and take on life's next big adventure.

The Academic Convocation ceremony is an occasion where we honor our very best and brightest. This year was no different with Intan Kartika from the School of Engineering, Science & Technology and Kam Cheng Eng from School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts receiving the Valedictorian Award for their all round excellence in various areas. Both delivered heartwarming speeches as representatives of the college's student community, and thanked KDU greatly for the dedicated tutelage and support that lead towards their success.

This year's ceremony also marks the first graduation batch of the KDU-KEELE University Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Business Management and Finance program. This KEELE Business program currently ranks 41 out of 109 top ranking universities in the UK and is the top ranking UK Business degree program in Northern Malaysia. Our 23 pioneering students will only the first of many, many more successful graduates coming from our partnership with KEELE.

The end of the ceremony saw the jubilant faces of all our graduates as they gripped their hard-earned scrolls like their tickets to the world. With a shout of triumph, they tossed their mortarboards into the air, marking their transition from students to qualified professionals and future masters.
