George Town, 7 September 2018 - FINAL year Built Environment students of KDU Penang University College highlighted their talents in an Architectural and Graphic Exhibition (A.G.E) at 1st Avenue Mall, Penang. The group of 16 from the Diploma in Interior Design and Diploma in Creative Media Design programmes displayed impressive portfolios of works.
From unique concepts for habitable spaces to marketing materials for actual business entities, there was much for visitors to see at the recent three-day event. Organising president Shareen Kuck said the aim was to show how design is bonded with almost everything, and how it has evolved over the ages.
“Pet hotels here tend to be basic cubicles only. I dream of opening one with a cafe, pet playing area and nicer accommodations,” Kuck said during the show’s opening ceremony recently.
Creative media student Lim Pei Yee, 21, designed a mock app ‘Getrust’, which allows one to book bus rides, track arrival times, submit feedback on drivers, monitor weather and play music. She also worked with a heritage cafe in Taiping – Yinns Patisserie – to update its signage, menus and promotional materials for social media like Instagram.
“I made the food imagery more prominent to attract customers,” she commented, reasoning that people tend to feast with their eyes first.
Coursemate Christinna Kuan, 21, also created marketing materials for Gallo Wine Bar in the Klang Valley, and came up with the app ‘Nutrifo’ that allows users to keep track of nutrition levels and eat healthily.
“I’ve had to juggle studies with my tasks as an influencer. I took fashion before, so now I’m adding art and design to my CV (curriculum vitae),” said Kuan.
Checking out the youngsters’ works during the launch were Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) chairman Datuk Seri Syed Jaafar Syed Ali, Vin Kerr Enterprise director Datuk Jefri Kuan, CKHO Architect principal Ho Chin Keng and Ken Ray Communications executive creative director Kenny Song.
KDU Penang deputy vice chancellor Associate Prof Dr Brian Charles Imrie quoted Steve Jobs in saying that “Design is not just what it looks and feels like, design is how it works. Interior design is what creates an environment of comfort for the occupant and perhaps subconsciously, impact how we live, work and play.
“Creative media design is art with the purpose of relaying the right message to the audience. Both play very important roles in enriching our wellbeing. As we advance as a nation, design is increasingly central to our lifestyles as the homes we live in, the cars we drive and the things we buy are all designed to suit our preferences and needs,” Imrie added in his speech.
