George Town, 17 April 2019 – KDU Penang University College (KDU Penang) keeps focusing on developing its campus to be as green as possible, to the extent of using robotic and software technology.
The Department of Computing, Department of Engineering and Go Green Society of KDU Penang organised “A Day with Eco, Science and Technology” workshop on April 13th, 2019 to teach secondary school students to apply science, technology, and engineering in an eco-friendly way and instill the spirit of a sustainable campus.
More than 100 students from Chung Ling High School, Penang, participated in this eco-friendly workshop. Some exciting and fun-filled games were conducted in this workshop to help the students expose themselves to science, technology and engineering and apply that knowledge to save the world environment.
“I enjoyed the challenge of building a robot. We were instructed to build a robot with using used electronic components. I used the second-hand battery and electronic components to build my own robot which was not worse than others,” said Andrew Ong from Chung Ling High School with a bright smile.
Other than that, the students also had an opportunity to develop their own software to classify recyclable and non-recyclable items.
“The software will help students to differentiate the items to solve the environmental issues,” said Ng Fong Chiu, senior lecturer of School of Computing, KDU Penang and also advisor of “A Day with Eco, Science and Technology” workshop.
"To be an eco-friendly campus, we must instill into the younger generation the knowledge and skills needed to conserve the environment.
“An eco-friendly campus will give positive energy to students,” Ng added.
The opening ceremony of the eco-science workshop was graced by Associate Professor Dr. Brian Imrie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of KDU Penang, Dr Yeap Gik Hong, Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Build Environment and Dr. Sim Hock Kheng, Head of Department of Engineering, KDU Penang.
KDU Penang will continuously play a role in caring for the environment and solving environmental issues when it opens its flagship campus this year at Metropolis Batu Kawan.
