‘That’s a lot of Cream Buns!”- KDU College Powers into The Malaysian Book of Records

MBR here we come! KDU College Penang made its way to the Malaysian Book of Records for the Longest Chocolate Cream Bun Line on the 21st of April 2012. The 530 m record which doubled the previous holding record took 1 week, 60 participants and 5300 pieces of éclair to complete and was in grand display in the Auditorium here at the esteemed 21 year old education institution's premises.

KDU's Program Leader for its famous Professional Chef Training program, Chef Syamsul Idham Musa was exceptionally proud of his charges who have worked hard throughout the past week to produce the 5300 éclairs in time for it to be assembled during the official record breaking event.

The event was also held concurrently with the 5th KDU Power Chef Competition with is an annual event that is modeled after prestigious Cooking Competitions from the likes of Master Chef, Iron Chef, The Chopping Board and the Battle of the Masters. Co organized by the KDU Prominence Team who are students from the KDU-IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel and Tourism Management program, the competition brought together participants from high schools from all around Penang comprising 50 teams from 20 schools to show off their flare for cooking and décor to stand above the rest claim the title of 'KDU Power Chef'. Visitors and supporters were also in droves and cheered for their favorite teams as the students prepared for this year's theme which was "Plated Deserts and Cakes".

This coveted event also saw an increase in competitive intensity this year with many of the high school students coming heavily prepared for the competition. KDU College Penang's Head for Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Miss Chua Shuw Huey and Power Chef 2012 Organizing Chairman Chef Zaihan also concurred and said that this year's competition had seen students more prepared with ideas and with attention to details for the setup. This was especially important since the students were graded on their skills and technique.

The event was also graced by the Guest of Honor for the event, YB Tuan Abdul Malik bin Abul Kassim, Religious Affair, Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs who addressed the crowd in his keynote speech, "I am pleased that the college provides good training facilities and I must congratulate KDU College for creating a platform for students to have hands-on exposure. Together with education, it will prepare them well into a borderless world to excel. Events such as this bring about lots of awareness towards the viability of the hospitality and culinary industry in Penang and Malaysia". He also witnessed the Malaysia Book of Records attempt and provided the finishing touches to the cream bun line towards the end of the 530m record breaking line.

Dr. Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College during the event said, "The competition prepares students to learn various aspects of culinary arts, they learn to create, innovate and cook professionally and the experience is immeasurable. Students share knowledge and skills and garner tips for creating a great meal."

Many of the participating students showed enthusiasm and talent as well as took the opportunity to meet their fellow peer culinarians as well as the renowned Power judges who are industry experts such as Chef Tommes - host of Asian Food Channel's (AFC) cooking show "Chalk & Cheese", Chef Azhar bin Bah - Senior Sous Chef of Gurney Hotel, Chef Bakar Bin Yusop - Pastry Chef of Gurney Hotel, Albert Goh See Pheng from Unilever Food Solution, Mr Yeoh - F &B Entrepreneur, and Chef Syamsul, Program Leader of the Professional Chef Training program of KDU College. Students were also graded on their work by famous food blogger Mdm. CK Lam.

At the end of the day, the attention to detail and creativity by team 'Clest la Bon' from SMK Union who comprised of Lim Choon Fern, Tan Chin Rou bagged the top prize of RM1000 cash , a Hamper from Pok Brothers as well as the prestigious KDU Power Chef Challenge Shield which will be displayed at their school for a year until the next challenge in year 2013. First runner-up went to Penang Chinese Girls Private High School's Tan Zhi Wen and See Fern Nee who went home with RM600 cash and KLDU Hampers, while the second runner-up went to SMK St Xavier students Lim Kim Aun and Wong Chun Fei who cuddled home Hampers and RM400.00 cash. It was indeed a fabulous day for everyone.
