Location: Penang Heritage Tour, George Town Penang
Students of Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management (DIPIHTM) had a fun day out touring Penang Heritage sites with their academic lecturer, Miss Cheng Chun Yi.
Everyone gathered at Masjid Kapitan Keling at around 8:30am. After a welcoming speech by the Project Manager, Mccaan Kang Meng Quan, students were divided into smaller groups and started the historical tour.
Students visited Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Acheen Street Mosque and batik museum. It was a great and enriching learning activity as students get to understand the culture, heritage, custom and background of different religions as well as traditions through their visitations.
The field trip did not just enhance their knowledge but instilled their soft skills as well. Students learnt the co-operative skill, risk and time management skill and how to be resourceful. Their planning and problem solving skills were also put to test when it rained heavily that they had to be fast and flexible enough to overcome challenges. Students were given the opportunity to be one-day tourist and it actually helped them to practise their bargaining skills when buying local souvenirs as well as learnt to become a responsible tourist.
Students were to submit an essay of the trip based on their individual’s observation and experiences throughout the journey. It is the college’s mission to provide outcome based education to our students and through such activities, it is hoped that students could learn more than what is provided in the classroom.
