KDU College Penang’s (KDU Penang) School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts kick-started 2014 with two prestigious awards! Its very own alumni Tan Zhi Hong was conferred the Most Promising Young Chef Award at the 26th Penang Chef’s Annual Dinner 2013 on January 14 2014. On another occasion, KDU Penang’s culinary team won big in the 1st Halal Battle of the Chefs Competition which was held on 17-19 Jan 2014.


Tan, a 23-year-old graduate from KDU’s IMI Diploma in Professional Chef Training and currently a Demi Chef at a hotel in Penang, was overjoyed with his recent achievement. He said, “I feel very proud and glad to receive this award; it is definitely an acknowledgement to all the efforts I have put in all this while as a chef.”


“I know I have made the right decision to study in KDU Penang as it has given me the fundamental knowledge and experiences to succeed in this industry. I am truly blessed to have met my mentor, Chef Darren Tan. His words of encouragement and advice have certainly helped to keep my passion alive,” he added during a tele-interview.


During his study with KDU Penang, Tan participated in various local and international competitions and bagged numerous medals with his outstanding presentation in culinary arts. Under the IMI programme, Tan also had the opportunity to undergo his internship in Cologne, Germany, where he met people from around the world and experienced different cultures. He is thankful that all these experiences and the many competitions that he has participated in have helped to bring his cooking skills to a whole new level.


 “It is the third consecutive year that KDU Penang’s alumni have been awarded the Most Promising Young Chef by the Chefs Association of Malaysia (Penang Chapter). I am truly honoured with their achievements,” said Ms Cindy Loh, Academic Department Head for the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts.


At the 1st Halal Battle of the Chefs Competition organised by the Chefs Association of Malaysia (Penang Chapter) at Setia SPICE in Penang, KDU Penang’s Chef and students won a total of 1 Gold, 8 Silver, 3 Bronze and 2 Diplomas.

Chef Muhamad Faizal, KDU Penang’s lecturer leading the team, was thrilled with the results and particularly proud with the students’ commitment and effort in achieving the victory. “Many professional chefs from hotels and institutions in Malaysia took part in this competition. Yet, our students showed that they are adequately capable and stood out among the competitors. They surely did a great job!” exclaimed Chef Faizal happily.

The IMI Diploma in Professional Chef Training programme offered by KDU Penang is one the best-received programme as it serves as a platform to encourage and nurture students’ passion in culinary arts. KDU Penang’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is also renowned for offering programmes that are relevant to today’s hospitality industry, with high-quality facilities and a team of dedicated staff who have direct industry experience.
