KDU College Penang (KDU Penang), a pioneer in the field of hospitality, tourism and culinary arts in the northern region, recently created a new industry standard in Penang following its successful collaboration with Holiday Inn Resort Penang in establishing a hospitality-training suite that was officially launched at its Penang campus on 1 October 2013.
The collaboration, which marks the very first physical partnership between KDU Penang and Holiday Inn Resort Penang in developing a mix-mode based training ground, complements KDU Penang’s already renowned hospitality syllabus by providing students with a similar industry simulated work place to help enhance their skills, experience and placement in the industry.
The new ‘KDU – Holiday Inn Hospitality Training Suite’ is an exact replica of a suite at Holiday Inn Resort Penang, and carries the hotel’s corporate brand identity complete with amenities, from the physical set up to the suite facilities available. The redesigning of KDU Penang’s hospitality training suite is certainly refreshing as it allows student the opportunity to undergo training in an actual resort environment-training suite based on a module that is almost similar to Holiday Inn’s hotel suite.
At the same launch, KDU Penang signed a collaboration agreement with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) Academy pertaining to the IHG’s iGrad programme, a structured internship program where students who undergo an internship stint will receive a globally recognized certificate. The plus point under this programme is that KDU Penang’s hospitality students are allowed to undergo practical training with hotels that are under the IHG Academy.
Ms. Cindy Loh, Head of Department for KDU Penang’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and Mr. Simon Douthett, General Manager of Holiday Inn Resort Penang were the signatories to the agreement. Ms. Cindy Loh thanked Holiday Inn Resort and IHG Academy for their trust in KDU Penang as their collaboration has brought two established brands together for the benefit of KDU Penang’s hospitality students. Said Ms. Cindy, “It has always been KDU’s philosophy to provide top class hospitality education and 5-star training facilities for our students. With this collaboration and many more in the pipeline, I believe it will give our students a clearer picture of the skills and real life experience needed in working in a 5-star hotel.”
Mr. Simon Douthett who was happy with the partnership also expressed his gratitude to KDU Penang in making this initiative possible. He said, “The IHG Academy initiative functions to breed better prepared and recognised hospitality graduates for the future and we have been looking forward to start off this meaningful collaboration with an established hospitality education provider. We have known KDU Penang to be a reputable hospitality and culinary arts education provider in Penang from our previous experiences and we truly hope that this collaboration will further strengthen our working relationship with KDU Penang in holistically training the next generation’s hospitality providers.”
The launching of this new re-designed training suite facility best exemplifies KDU Penang’s continued commitment to be the premier hospitality, tourism and culinary arts training provider in the northern region. The hospitality and culinary arts school, which is equipped with RM6 million worth of learning facilities, has also opened a new Italian-modeled Al Fresco Café learning facility for its students this year and a newly renovated fine dining restaurant.
