Date : 17 – 20 September, 2012
Venue : Georgetown, Penang
100 students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts were selected to participate in the TPO Forum and Festival 2012 scheduled from 17 – 20 September, 2012. This event was organized by the Penang Local Council (MPPP). It was held in a few locations such as Bayview Beach Resort, Upper Penang Road and Friendship Park. Mr Taqriz Shah, MICE and Events Operations Lecturer from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts led a group of lecturers and students to take part in this historical event.
Students from the Diploma in Professional Chef Training assisted in preparing Malaysian Traditional Foods such as lemang, ketupat, beef and chicken rendang and also chicken tikka for the food demo and exhibition. The traditional foods were served to international delegates ‘tapas style’ as part of promoting food tourism as one of the tourism products in Penang. This was good exposure to the students as they learnt how to work as a team besides experiencing preparing food for VVIPs. All chef students had successfully displayed positives attitudes and impressive performance while they performed their duty.
Meanwhile, BAIHTM students were assigned to assist the organizer in planning and preparing the event venue. This was part of the outcome based education learning as it provides an opportunity for both lecturer and students to be actively involved in the creation of an event, and to enhance students’ ability in planning and executing an event together with the local council. During the planning process, students were required to present the lay out plan at all venues to the Chairman of MPPP for approval. While for the students, this is the best chance for them to apply what they have learnt in theoretical aspects under EM005 and EM006 subjects. They have to work as a team to set up an outdoor venue for the photo exhibition area, heritage trail, tree planting ceremony and outdoor venue for the forum.
Overall this event is a good platform for students to gain valuable experience. Apart from learning, this event helped students develop their talent and also groom their potential.
